Korea say 168,000 attended first F1 race but many tickets were given away

The inaugural Korean Grand Prix attracted 168,000 spectators over the three-day event, the race organisers claimed on Friday. However local media reported significant numbers of tickets were given away for free to boost attendance at the first race at the Korean International Circuit. The Korea Auto Valley Operation (KAVO) claimed attendance figures of 25,000 for [...]

2010 Estoril 125cc FP1 Result - Smith Fastest In Washed Out Session

Practice got underway at Estoril in light rain, but the weather quickly took a turn for the worse, the rain becoming very intense by the end of the first session of practice, the 125cc class. Bradley Smith topped the timesheets in the session, putting in a fast lap early on, but the final standings were relatively meaningless, with a difference of over 21 seconds from fastest to slowest. British rider Danny Webb and his Andalucia Cajasol teammate Alberto Moncayo took 2nd and 3rd, ahead of Stipa Molenaar's Randy Krummenacher, but Krummenacher was already over 5 seconds slower than Smith's fastest lap.

Forecast for the rest of the day is for strong winds and storms, calling into question the usefulness the rest of the day.

Hamilton: Alonso would have passed me

Lewis Hamilton said he would have struggled to win the Korean Grand Prix even if he hadn’t gone off in front of eventual winner Fernando Alonso. Hamilton told his official website: I think it would have been extremely difficult. For the whole race, I was struggling with grip, and having trouble getting the car slowed [...]

Aragon World Superbike Test Day 2 Times

Testing continued on Thursday for the World Superbike grid at the Motorland Aragon circuit, and with Carlos Checa having taken his leave early to head to Estoril for an outing aboard the Pramac Ducati MotoGP bike, it was Max Biaggi's turn to top the timesheets. Biaggi took nearly seven tenths of his time from Wednesday, after having spent the session testing new brakes from Brembo. The Italian judged them to be a big improvement, but the increase in braking power made the bike difficult to control on the brakes. More setup work will be required, according to the Italian, which will continue tomorrow.

The absence of precise timing saw four men tie for the 2nd fastest time, Alstare Suzuki's Michel Fabrizio, BMW's Troy Corser, Pata Aprilia's Nori Haga and the Kawasaki of Tom Sykes. Biaggi's Alitalia Aprilia teammate Leon Camier was just a tenth of a second slower, while Leon Haslam was 1.3 seconds slower than Max Biaggi.

Testing concludes on Friday.

Aragon World Superbike Test Day 1 Times

The World Superbike riders have been hard at work for the 2011 season, with a large group gathering at the Motorland Aragon circuit to test their new bikes for next season. Carlos Checa was the fastest of the bunch by over a second, the Althea Ducati rider due to set out for Estoril on Thursday.

Michel Fabrizio's switch to the Alstare Suzuki team has gone swimmingly so far, the former Xerox Ducati rider the 2nd fastest rider on track, ahead of a bevy of Aprilia's, led by 2010 World Superbike Champion Max Biaggi, though new convert Noriyuki Haga interposed himself between the two factory bikes of Biaggi and Leon Camier.

Work continues for the Kawasaki team on their brand new bike, with Tom Sykes and Katsuaki Fujiwara testing the 2011 version of the ZX-10R, with Sykes also running back-to-back comparisons with the 2010 bike. But the BMW pit has been busiest, with a host of experienced mechanics being brought in to work on the bike for next season. So far, it has not produced the results hoped for, as Troy Corser and new signing Leon Haslam were well down the timesheets.

Bernie Ecclestone hits 80 with no sign of slowing down (Pictures)

Bernie Ecclestone, the most powerful man in Formula 1, turn 80 years old today. He’s been a racing driver, a manager and a team owner. But above all it’s in his role as president of Formula One Management that he exerts far-reaching influence over F1. As he marks his 80th birthday he shows no sign [...]

Now It's Official: Toseland To BMW Italia Satellite Team

After the unofficial confirmation by Toseland himself at a charity event in the UK, comes the official confirmation from the BMW Italia team. James Toseland is to race alongside 2010 Superstock 1000 champion Ayrton Badovini in the satellite BMW Italia squad for 2011. The BMW Italia squad dominated the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup this season, and the operation is widely regarded as extremely effective.

The team is to be very much a satellite effort, rather than a privateer outfit, with BMW Italia receiving engine and electronics support from the BMW Motorrad factory squad. With Badovini having dominated the Superstock class, there is no doubting the Italian's ability, and Toseland's long and varied experience should help the squad. After losing his factory ride with the Sterilgarda Yamaha team, the BMW Italia ride is a strong alternative for Toseland.

The official press release appears below:

BMW Motorrad Italia enters Superbike World Championship.

The winning team of the 2010 Superstock 1000 FIM Cup will debut with riders Ayrton Badovini and James Toseland.

Jack Armstrong?s ?Million Dollar Harley-Davidson? ? Further Proof You Can?t Buy Taste

I suffered through four semesters of art history classes in college (thanks general education requirements!) to realize two big things about art: 1) never date a painter or anyone that refers to themselves as an “artiste”, and 2) aesthetics are subjective, and should be internally processed. So with that intro in mind, I hope you’ll see [...]

McLaren and Red Bull need to bow to the inevitable and back one driver

If Red Bull and McLaren were in any doubt of the advantages of throwing their championship efforts behind one driver, Fernando Alonso’s rise from fifth place before the German Grand Prix to championship leader should cause them to re-evaluate their approach. As argued here before in two previous articles, the World Motor Sport Council’s decision [...]

Rossi To Test The Ducati At Valencia

It appears the decision the world has been waiting for has finally been taken: According to MCN's Matt Birt, Valentino Rossi will be allowed to test the Ducati at Valencia. It appears that Rossi was told by Masao Furusawa on Saturday night that he would be allowed to test after the final MotoGP round of the year.

The decision had been almost inevitable, but Yamaha had been holding off on announcing for as long as possible. It has long been customary for factories to allow their departing riders to test for their new teams after the final race, the only exception in recent history being Valentino Rossi, after he left Honda to join Yamaha. Ducati had already set an example by releasing Casey Stoner early to test for Honda, the team he joins for 2011, and Rossi had expected Yamaha to do the same. Yamaha, however, had been playing their cards close to their chest, in part as this was the only leverage they had over Rossi to ensure he did not hinder his teammate Jorge Lorenzo's bid for the 2010 championship.
